Steve 1974

Hello and best wishes to all my former associates and Xeroids! Thanks to Jimmy K and any others involved in this effort to get us (somewhat) together again. I have really been taken back to many pleasant memories as I read profiles and checked out the pictures.
In December of 1971, Gary Stitz and Tom Ossenford hired me at Xerox and considering I graduated from UK, was asked to start in Lexington and work for K. David Robertson.
Target Practice with Watermelon Seed
It was really exciting and rewarding to have won a number of awards, plaques, prize points and the famous Jim Woodcock Silver Julep Cups and Platters along with many other fun and useful items.  I still remember how proud I was, winning a “Bulova Accuquartz” watch, and a Sharp calculator that was about the size of a pack of cigarettes. I used that calculator for years, (even as they continued to get smaller and smaller) and was still wearing that watch when cell phones became popular.
Upon my resignation from Xerox in 1978 I accepted a position with “Baxter Travenol” (a hospital supply company) in Indiana where I had great success in rebuilding a depressed territory.
After rebuilding the hospital supply territory, a friend approached me to assist their family in building a travel business with a British manufacturer of auto parts here in the US. (All I could think of was how often George Hodgson's MG was in the repair garage across the street from the Xerox office) so this job was a “No Brainer”!
After a successful experience in the travel business, I began working for Atlantic Envelope in Shelbyville, KY and quickly became sales manager with seven reps in a six-state area.  It was enjoyable and creative, but as many of you know, being a "Road Warrior" was very challenging.  Even though travel was a challenge, I accepted another position with a manufacturer of lady's clothing out of Florida called “Sanibel Sport” which also required a great deal of travel that was very difficult and demanding on my marriage!  While searching for another job without the travel, my wife, Pat, learned that she had cancer and eventually passed away, peacefully and comfortably in a Hospice Hospital.

After Pat passed away, I moved back home to Troy, Ohio and landed a job with Woodhull Copiers in Dayton, selling RISO digital printers, with much success for six years.  My success caught the attention of RISO (the manufacturer) and at that time, had a desire to move to Florida.  So I moved to Orlando and sold the RISO products directly for RISO, however, shortly after moving to Florida, RISO had a national cutback and I was downsized for a couple of days.  I quickly began working for OfficeMax as a Senior Sales Supervisor for corporate accounts in Ft. Myers, FL, until my father passed away at the ripe old age of 90 . (Mother died prior to the move to Florida).  While in Troy, Ohio on a leave of absence to finalize my father's estate I made the decision to retire and not return to Florida or to work.

Finally, as soon as I submit this report, my retirement will be official ! Now, you know the REST of the story!

"My Xerox career started in 1968 with a great deal of wonder"
I wondered why Paul Logsdon had plaques all over his office walls, and Rich Fuchs had none.  Both were sales managers!  Rich said his were packed away.  Why did Dave Deeb walk around yukking all the time? Camel jock talk.  Why did Bill Hetzel, Louisville Branch Manager, remove all chairs from the bullpen? So sales reps would spend less time in the office. We went to Air Devils Inn instead !  Needless to say I  was in the right  place with a bunch of strange people, laughing, joking, zany, but didn’t we have a great time?

My first sales territory was north of Broadway, west of tenth street, west of 18th street and south to county line.  I was told it had more potential than any other.  As a young cub, to me, it truly did.  Now was the time to get a few plaques!!

In 1970 a sales team was formed including Gary Shuetz, Sal Marino and me as team leader, with my high potential territory!  Talking about “hungry guys” this team won $1,000 in our first contest.  We all went to dinner with wives and guys had two entrees of “steak and lobster”.

In 1971 Karen and I adopted Scott (5) and Renotta (6) siblings.  We built a home in Crestwood, Oldham County.  Stability was important to us and we never moved for a better job.  My two brothers and daughter, Renotta live within a mile. Scott died in 1994 but he is still with us in spirit.

In 1972, Paul Logsdon moved on to greater heights and I became the Xerox Account Manager for GE, and for major accounts.  In those days, everyone helped each other.  Experienced reps trained us.  Administration helped with billing, proposal writing, etc. What would we have done without service? The tech reps went on tough sales calls with us.
We were all friends and golfed, fished and partied together.
The amazing Xerox experience created a spirit so special to the Louisville Branch, that we were recognized countrywide.  “Come” we said, “and study us and you can learn our high goals and standards”.

In 1974 I was promoted to National Account Manager for General Electric, and had various locations over a 15-year time period. Travel was involved and was controllable. I visited many other Branch Offices but Louisville was head and shoulders above them all. Why?  A combination of talented people, cohesive, with a spirit and confidence accustomed to winning. However, I never saw as many plaques as Paul Logsdon had.  My most memorable award was a 'little red hat with yellow feather' a roadrunner from Evansville. I still have it!  The other awards are packed away, but I didn’t have as many as Paul Logsdon.

Later in 1985 I was promoted to Senior National Account Manager after closing an order for (8) 9200's and recognized as vendor of the year by GE.
With that of course, was a bigger budget next year.

I left Xerox in 1987 on my terms and no hard feeling.  At that time I was reporting to Joe Mulcahy VP at Corporate, (incidentally his wife Anne Mulcahy  just retired from Xerox as Chairman of the Board), some of my friends were retiring and some had died.  It was time to go, a new era was coming, and The 'Spirit of Xerox' was changing.  Looking back, Louisville had the greatest group of people, amazingly competitive, close knit and loyal.

The next phase of my business career was with Bill Hinton and Harry Frazier.  We formed 'HFH' and focused on real estate development.  We were very successful in a high risk, big money business.  In 1992 I left HFH, moved my office to Crestwood. and since, dabbled in smaller projects.

Several old Xeroids  stop by and some ask do you work? “If doing what you want, when, for whom, and how much, then, yes I work”.  Now at age 72, I learned that loving other people and trusting God, we can explore limits, push harder and achieve what your mind didn't think you could.

Like all of you, “being positive keeps us young”.

Now, I watch golf, football and basketball I enjoy beautiful pictures on remarkable technology. Don't play games much any more and I love to read, learn, and visit my farm and nature.  Sometime Karen and I travel. My last big trip was to Home Depot!

Yes we can, and yes we did great things together”

Shelby Carter (1931 - 2017)

Shelby H. Carter, Jr. died peacefully on January 25, 2017 surrounded by his beloved wife of 63 years, Pat, and family who were so important in his life, he was 86..
Shelby retired from Xerox in 1985 as Xerox Corporate Vice-President and General Sales Manager of the company's worldwide operations.
He was a multitalented man of many professional accomplishments, but his family was always his highest priority and greatest source of inspiration. Shelby referred to Pat as "the flower of my life". He also credited her as being his secret weapon in his many life ventures.  Shelby was born on March 23, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Chief Mate on a merchant marine vessel, was killed in the Battle of the Atlantic during WWII. Shelby was eleven and his sister, Alice, was nine. Their mother, a Scottish immigrant, worked tirelessly to raise them and her effort was rewarded. Shelby earned an academic scholarship to McDonogh School, a military academy near Baltimore, Maryland. Shelby always said that McDonogh was a surrogate father to him teaching him values like hard work, integrity, and the importance of a solid education. While attending McDonogh, Shelby began dating a beautiful and vivacious young woman named Pat Bunn who would become his wife and partner for life.

After graduating from McDonogh in 1949, Shelby enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin where he joined the Sigma Nu Fraternity, NROTC, and qualified for Marine Platoon Leaders Class. In 1953, Shelby received his B.B.A., married Pat, and began active duty as Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He was selected as aid-to-camp to General Edward W. Snedeker, Commanding General of the Second Marine Division.

Following his love for family and his pride in the United States Marine Corps, Shelby cherished new ideas and new ventures. His indomitable spirit lead him to be an influential figure in American business and Texas education over a five decade span. Shelby spent 24 years with IBM and then Xerox retiring from the latter company in 1985 as Xerox Corporate Vice-President and General Sales Manager of the company's worldwide operations. The title itself tells of his corporate accomplishments, but does not fully describe the admiration of his peers and subordinates nor does it describe the energy and innovative attitude he brought to Corporate America at that time.

Ray Kelly (deceased)

Raymond W. Kelly, Jr.
  • July 2, 1944 - July 28, 2012
  • Lima, Ohio
Ray started with Xerox as a salesman in 1972 in the Corbin, KY area.  He was a very focused and high energy sales representative but his biggest asset was he made a friend of every prospect and customer.

K David Robertson ask me (Jim Kincer) to train Ray considering I had the territory next to Rays territory.  One thing that I learned very quickly, ray was all business, there was no kidding around, strictly business!

I remember the first sales call Ray and I made together, in Corbin. It was a medium size factory, Ray and I got out of his car, and as I walked toward the door, I turned to find that Ray was still gathering notebooks, files and other sales material fro his car!  I walked back and ask him what he was going to do with all of that "stuff', his reply was, "well, I want to make sure I can answer any question they might have"!  After that, we had a little meeting in the car!  The call went well and he did get the business!

John Robison shared the following:  Ray was a very nice person, Donna and I had some fun times with he and Sandy on a Presidents Club trip.  I made Ray a "Xerox Agent" in Corbin in 1984 and I remember he was also in the computer business.

Pete joined Xerox in the early 70’s in the Louisville branch and worked for Tom Heffner in the Evansville Area Sales Office.  My first sales territory was Jim Connor’s old territory (Connor had been promoted).

My first sales assignment was very successful and after a short time, was promoted to Duplicator Specialist and was granted the opportunity to work with the entire Evansville Sales Team.  Much appreciation needs to be given to Paul Logsdon and Ron Hoffman who taught me about selling duplicators and the business needs of such a product.

When John Robison became our Leader in Evansville, we were all completely impressed with his excitement and enthusiasm.   He introduced the “World Famous Roadrunners” to the entire Xerox Corporation and we were all very proud!  We were extremely victorious!

In 1973, when Marc Eisner became Branch Manager of the Kansas City Branch, he offered me the position of Area Sales Manager in Topeka, KS; I accepted and moved in September.

After three years in Kansas, I resigned from Xerox in 1976 and worked for the next 13 years selling large web printing presses and computers.  I was with MCI Telecommunications as a Sales Manager in its growing years.

In 1989, a very good friend and I founded and started InkJet, IncInkJet, Inc is a company that furnishes ink to manufacturing companies that print “code” on thousands of products found in grocery stores for example.  I am now retired and do floors and windows, when told !

I have been married for 18 years to Tracy and have twins 14 years old.  (Petey & Alexandra)
Plus we have two great dogs! We love to travel and have a great time!
